The Greater Mercer Area Healthcare Foundation, a newly founded nonprofit organization, has awarded its first two scholarships to Teara Wilson and Khadijah Barchue, both enrolled in the certified nursing assistant program at Berkel Training Institute, located at 320 W. State St. in Trenton.
Citing the shortage of nurses aides in nursing homes, the scholarship program aims to make it financially accessible for students to obtain certification, giving them the opportunity of immediate employment upon passing the state exam.
The foundation — which was started from proceeds of the sale of Arcadia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hamilton Square — is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that relies solely on grants, fundraising and donations. To learn more, visit gmahealthcarefoundation.com.
