The Melrose-Wakefield Area Branch of the American Association of University Women will offer two scholarships for the 2021-22 academic year.
A branch scholarship, which is in the amount of $1,500, is available as a result of the fundraising activities of the branch and donations received in memory of branch members and their loved ones. This year, the branch scholarship will be given in memory of Ann Haddock, late of Melrose, who passed away in October 2020. Haddock was a graduate of Medford High School and Middlebury College. She was a member of AAUW for decades and served as a founding member of the Scholarship Committee and as its chair for many years. She was a kind and caring individual, who valued opportunities for service to nonprofit organizations such as AAUW, the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church, the Fitch Home and the Boston Visiting Nurses Association.
The other scholarship, which is in the amount of $600, is offered from the Diana L. Goldblith Scholarship Fund, which was established by donations from Goldblith’s family and friends following her sudden death in June 1990. Goldblith, a longtime Melrose resident, was an active participant in AAUW’s Literature Group, Great Decisions Group and Stellar Investment Club.
To be eligible, one must be a resident of Melrose, Wakefield, North Reading, Georgetown, Stoneham, Wilmington, Cambridge, Dracut or Georgetown, Maine. These are all communities from which the branch derives members this year. In addition, one must attend or be a graduate of a four-year AAUW-accredited college or university, and must have completed at least two years of study prior to the fall of 2021. Special consideration will be given to applicants who have maintained high academic standing and can demonstrate a need for the scholarship for a specific purpose related to educational goals. All applications will be processed anonymously.
Applications are available immediately and must be returned by April 16. The recipients of the scholarships will be notified prior to May 12.
To receive an application, candidates may also send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: AAUW Scholarship, c/o Sullivan & Clark, 106 West Foster St., Melrose, MA 02176, or send an email request to jac_sullivanandclark@comcast.net.
