Kelly Oubre Jr. is giving back to two states he grew up in and the current one he’s starring in right now.

The Phoenix Suns wing is providing 20 scholarships to graduates from Arizona, Texas and Louisiana enrolled in a college or trade school in the fall who demonstrated “a marked improvement in character, attitude or self-esteem.”

“The sky is the limit for the next generation,” Oubre said in a news release. “You get out what you put in, and I’d only hope that we are motivated to pass the baton forward. I will continue to grow as an individual and I challenge you to do the same but help someone out along the way.”

Oubre grew up in New Orleans, but moved to Houston due to Hurricane Katrina. He’s having a career season in his first full year in Phoenix in averaging 18.7 points.

“Helping the youth to thrive in the places that I either live in, or have been blessed to live in has always been a big goal of mine,” said Oubre, who spent his first three full NBA seasons playing for the Washington Wizards before they traded him to Phoenix during the 2018-19 season.

Partnering with the National Basketball Players Association, Oubre says he’s looking to serve as a mentor. He was scheduled to have Zoom chats with scholarship recipients Friday from the Boys & Girls Club and North High School in Phoenix.

“You go through so much growing up no matter where that is, that you’re somewhat indebted in the community,” Oubre said. “Now to be able to utilize my platform to help the youth reach new heights is a blessing.”

Oubre is listed as an Suns player’s representative in the NBPA.
