A Jean M. R. Smith scholar must show strength in academics, demonstrate a positive engagement in community service, exhibit leadership qualities and be active in extracurricular activities. The Foundation aims to provide support for young adults from Huron County who see college education as a stepping-stone toward a lifetime of contribution within their family and community.
“Every year we are overwhelmed with the incredible promise and passion of the upcoming generation. With the help of a college education, we believe each student will be well prepared to take advantage of opportunities and solve problems in their professional careers and service activities,” said Rosemary Esch, the Foundation’s executive director. “These young leaders exhibit a high-level of integrity and maturity without sacrificing balance in life. Our growing family of scholars inspires us all,” added Bob Sajdak, the Foundation’s president.
The Foundation’s Board of Directors join the families, friends, and teachers in congratulating each of the recipients on their achievement of becoming a Jean M. R. Smith scholar.
The Jean M. R. Smith Foundation was established in 1996 by Jean Smith, a former Huron County resident, for the primary purpose of granting four-year college scholarships to Huron County high school seniors who are seeking to obtain an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. Students must reside in Huron County, graduate from a Huron County high school, and intend to pursue an undergraduate degree in order to be considered. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded over $3.4 million in scholarships to 223 high school seniors.
