Take Stock in Children of Sarasota County scholar and Booker High School senior Myles Summerlin has been named one of six winners of this year’s Leaders for Life (L4L) Fellowship. The L4L Fellowship is sponsored by the Asofsky Family Foundation and comes with a $40,000 scholarship. The scholarship pays for college expenses not covered by any other award or financial aid.

Every year, the statewide Take Stock in Children (TSIC) partners with the Asofsky Family Foundation for the Leaders 4 Life program. The mission of the L4L fellowship program is to enable highly motivated TSIC scholars from around the state that have demonstrated strong leadership skills, moral character and academic success to excel in a university environment by providing them with the tools and resources necessary to empower them to develop to their fullest potential. The ultimate goal of the program is to eliminate the financial burdens normally associated with a university education and to allow the fellows to devote 100% of their attention to their studies and personal development.

Each year, more than 100 of TSIC’s top students from across Florida apply for the L4L fellowship program. Following a highly competitive selection process, only 12 high school seniors are chosen as finalists for this prestigious honor. All 12 finalists receive an Apple MacBook Pro to bolster their achievements, both in and out of the classroom. From these 12 finalists, six students are selected for the L4L fellowship, providing each student with up to $10,000 annually for leadership training and development, housing, food, textbooks, supplies, transportation and other college-related expenses.

Booker High School senior Myles Summerlin and his Take Stock in Children mentor Mitch Leon. Summerlin has been named one of six winners of this year’s Leaders for Life Fellowship.

“Myles is an amazing young man and so deserving of this scholarship,” says Lisa Bechtold, Sarasota TSIC Executive Director. “This, in addition to his Take Stock scholarship, will allow Myles to pursue his dream of studying film. We are so proud and know that he is destined for greatness.” TSIC works to break the cycle of poverty through a mentoring-focused scholarship program.

In Sarasota County, TSIC scholars are chosen in sixth through ninth grade through an application and selection process based upon financial need, academic achievement, consistent attendance and good character. Scholars who are selected for TSIC agree to meet weekly with their mentor, remain crime/gang/drug/alcohol free, and maintain a 2.5 grade-point average. Students who successfully complete the program receive a Florida Prepaid college tuition scholarship upon high school graduation.

Donations to purchase scholarships are accepted throughout the year and mentors are always being recruited. Anyone interested in assisting with scholarship purchases or becoming a volunteer mentor devoting 30 minutes each week on school campus should visit takestocksarasota.org for more information.
