Applications are now available to students who live in Northampton County for the Dr. Joseph A. Fleetwood, Jr. Scholarship.

The Fleetwood Scholarship was established in 1999 by the citizens of Conway and the surrounding areas for students who are interested in pursuing a career in a medical-related field and who will hopefully return to serve their community as Dr. Fleetwood did for over 50 years.

Dr. Joseph A. Fleetwood, Jr.

Application information will be sent by April 1 to the guidance counselors’ offices of high schools which may have students from Northampton County. The committee recognizes that with some schools being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it may not be possible for students to see their counselors to pick up an application.

Applications are also available at the Jackson branch of Southern Bank on Main Street or at Conway Photo Shop in Conway. Students should call Donna Burgess at the bank if they would like to pick up an application there and she will make arrangements for this since most bank business is currently being handled through the drive-through window. Students may call Carol Hedspeth Lowe at Conway Photo Shop and pick up an application there. Students may also receive an application via email by contacting Lowe at conwayphoto@mchsi.com.

Another option for receiving an application is by downloading the form at the www.nccommunityfoundation.org website. They should click on “Apply for Grants and Scholarships”, select “Northampton County” from the drop-down menu and then download the application and the financial information form.

Applicants must submit the completed application and all supporting documents by 5 pm on May 3 to the Dr. Joseph A. Fleetwood Scholarship Committee, c/o Southern Bank in Jackson. Applicants entering college for the first time must submit the completed application form and financial information form from the NC Community Foundation, the FAFSA Student Aid Report, an official high school transcript and list of extracurricular activities, two letters of recommendation, and an essay. ]

College students presently pursuing a career in a medical field must submit an application including the financial information forms, a current transcript from their college or university and a letter to the committee outlining their career aspirations.

The committee recognizes that there may be difficulties in the application process due to the current pandemic. If an applicant is experiencing difficulties and needs assistance, he or she should contact Donna Burgess at Southern Bank in Jackson or Carol Hedspeth Lowe at Conway Photo Shop in Conway.

The scholarship committee welcomes any contributions to the scholarship endowment. Donations can be made c/o Southern Bank, PO Box 276, Jackson NC 27845.
