LAS CRUCES – Kendra Good, a student in the Doña Ana Community College Health Information Technology program was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship for outstanding accomplishments in her major.
Good is the only student in a New Mexico HIT program to be so awarded. The New Mexico Health Information Management Association made the announcement and presented the scholarship virtually in lieu of presenting it at their annual conference in Albuquerque due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The competitive scholarship is awarded each year to one HIT or Health Information Management student in the state. The award is based on the student’s grade point average and a personal essay.
“Ms. Good reflects the quality of students we see here in the DACC HIT program,” said Associate Professor Laura de la Cruz. “As a program, we are thrilled that she was awarded this competitive scholarship.”
The DACC HIT program is a rigorous major, teaching students the administrative and technical skills to process, analyze and report health information in a wide variety of health care settings. In addition to providing a broad medical base, students must master computer literacy, professional practice skills and life skills — such as critical analytical thinking, problem-solving and good study habits. Upon completion of the program, graduates are prepared for entry-level employment as health information technicians.
“Our program is embracing technology to help our students succeed in the workplace by using iPads for courses beginning this fall,” de la Cruz said. “In addition, we are a program that is 100% online so we are a great option for anyone who is seeking a new career or wants to update their skills in this industry.”
The NMHIMA promotes quality health information for the benefit of patients, healthcare facilities, providers and other users of health information through education, advocacy and collaboration.
