AVON, Ohio – Styles may change, but the Duck Tape prom celebration is holding its own, even after 20 years. The 20th annual Duck Tape Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest had to make some changes this year due to proms that have been cancelled all over the country due to COVID-19.
“Stuck at Prom has evolved from a simple contest into an annual tradition for creative teens to showcase their style, imagination and immense talents,” said Ashley Luke, senior product manager at ShurTech Brands, LLC, the company that markets the Duck® brand.
“Our Duck Tape® fans mean the world to us. As prom cancellations started rolling in across the country in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we felt it important to keep the tradition alive in these unprecedented times, while prioritizing the safety of our participants.”
The contest may have moved online but will still award almost $25,000 in scholarships and prizes. The quirky contest has become a tradition over the past two decades but contestants won’t have to wear their creations to a prom.
The contest entry period is April 1 through June 8 this year. High school students in the U.S. and Canada are invited to upload photos and videos online of their dress and tuxedo creations made with Duck Tape.
During June 9-19, a panelist of judges will select five finalists for a dress and five for a tuxedo. Important elements to impress the judges include color, design, workmanship and originality, according to Samantha Eastman, Senior Account Manager for Falls, a marketing agency in Cleveland. “They will also consider how the Duck Tape was utilized in the creation of the dress or tux and accessories,” she said.
The public will then vote online from June 29 through July 10 for their favorite dress and tuxedo, said Eastman. “The two (grand prize) winners receive a $10,000 scholarship. Eight runners-up receive $500 scholarships and Duck brand prize packs worth $100.”
The two grand prize winners will be announced on or about July 21.
